DEFINITION OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

Denbighshire Domestic Abuse Forum (2002)

“Domestic Abuse is the physical, sexual, psychological abuse of an individual by a family member, partner or ex-partner (partner includes spouse, co-habitee or other person who has a close personal relationship, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.)”

N. Wales Domestic Abuse Forum (2003)

“Domestic Abuse is the emotional, physical, sexual, psychological or economic abuse of power and the exercise of control by an individual or individuals of a family member, partner or ex-partner regardless of gender, age or sexual orientation.”

Women’s Aid

“Domestic violence is usually defined as physical, emotional, sexual and other abuse by someone (usually but not always a man) of a person (usually but not always a woman) with whom they have or have had some form of intimate relationship such as marriage, in order to maintain power and control over that person.”
